Economic Growth
Jersey County, along with all the communities contained within its borders is growing in population. Especially the two incorporated communities of Jerseyville, the county seat and Grafton.
In 1990, the communities of Jerseyville and Grafton were 7,382 and 918 respectively. In 2000, the communities were 7,984 and 609. The decline in population in Grafton between 1990 and 2000 was due to the 1993 Flood. However, the total county which in 1990 was 20,539 grew to 21,668 according to the official 2000 Census.
Today (2007), the projected census for both Jerseyville and Grafton is over 7,600 and 750 respectively. Jersey County is projected to be over 24,000.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Census, Jersey County over the next ten years is expected to increase by 5.1% in population. Also, over the next ten years, an estimated 700 housing units will be constructed in Jersey County to accommodate population growth and replacement of some existing Jersey County housing.
When compared with the rest of rural Illinois, Jersey County has a relatively high income profile and has experienced growth well above the rate of growth for most Illinois counties. Jersey County household incomes are 14% higher that the average for rural Illinois. Between 1991 and 2001, personal income increased 67.8% ranking it 17th out of 102 Illinois counties, only four rural counties posted growth rates ahead of Jersey.
